Rabies Dog Immunization in the Northern Frontier Division of Kenya
We have been vaccinating dogs and other animals against rabies in the Lake Turkana area of Kenya for 10 years!
Rabies or lyssa has been one of the most feared human diseases obtained from animals since time immemorial. The very name Lyssa in ancient culture belongs to the goddess of madness, the daughter of the goddess of the night Nyx. Due to the dramatic course and the inevitable fatal end, the mention of rabies is already found in the Mesopotamian code of the city of Eshunna, which is over two and a half thousand years old, and the topic of rabies was later avoided by classics of ancient literature such as Homer and Aristotle.
A milestone in the relationship between humans and lyssaviruses was 1885, when Luis Pasteur first successfully used a rabbit spinal cord vaccine to save the life of a young man, Joseph Meister, bitten by an angry dog. From Paster's pioneering experiments, it was just a step towards the first dog-targeted vaccination campaign in Japan in the 1920s. Today, preventive vaccination in all its forms is a key element in the prevention of rabies worldwide.
